Booktalk: Lockdown: Escape from the Furnace by Alexander Gordon Smith
Lockdown: Escape from Furnace
Book 1
When 14-year-old Alex is sentenced to life in the furnace– an underground prision– he finds himself surrounded by bizarre lights, sounds, and guards. Desperate to escape and clear his name, Alex teams with a group of inmates before it is too late. This is the first in a gritty, thrilling series.
Tips:
-
The first book ends with a cliffhanger that will leave readers desperate for the the next in the series. Luckily, Solitary is now available.
-
This dystopic novel features a world that is very hostile to teens in general, and many of Alex’s fellow inmates have been framed as well, suggesting a much larger conspiracy.
-
Though this depiction of jail is harsh (the food is horrible), frightening (the guards are super automatons) and alarming (skinless guard dogs, anyone?), the enemy is clearly something more sinister than simply other inmates.
