Stanley Buggles has come to Crampton Rock to claim the house left to his family by Great-Uncle Admiral Bartholomew Swift.  Candlestick Manor is much grander than anything he expected, and the 11-year-old is happy to settle into his plush new setting and explore the bizarre collections of his recently deceased relative.  When Stanley hears that his Great-Uncle was a victim of a werewolf that has plagued the island, he is immediately eager to investigate.  The warnings of the housekeeper and a strange stuffed pike only increase his interest and soon Stanley is loose upon the plains.  Will the werewolf attack again?  Or will lurking pirates be Stanley’s undoing first?

Stanley and the residents of Crampton Rock are quirky and fun, and coupled with a creepy and dark atmosphere, this chapter book promises to be a big hit with young male readers.  The simple black and white illustrations add to the story, and quick pacing guarantees that readers will keep turning the pages.  Female readers may also enjoy the series, but some may be put off by the dark, dank atmosphere.  The strongest characters throughout, however, are the offbeat and dearly departed Great-Uncle Admiral Bartholomew Swift  and the family manor filled with his treasures.  With strange collections in every room, more adventures are assured.
