Friends Calder, Petra and Tommy (first introduced in Saving Vermeer) are sixth graders in Hyde Park.  With completely different strengths and interests, the three often find themselves in conflict with one another as they struggle to find their place within the group.  But when their teacher, Ms. Hussey, tells them that the Robie House, designed by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, may be broken up and sold, the three unite to investigate.  Their look inside the history of the house turns up a number of tragedies and a great deal of suspense.  As they learn more about the house and its creator, the three learn that their different strengths are all needed to unravel the mystery.

Calder, Petra and Tommy are so well drawn that readers young and old can find someone to relate to.  As a group, the three make a great team, and their interactions with one another illustrate very common problems in grade school situations.   All of the books starring these characters contain a great deal of excellent art and history.  Balliett makes all of these subjects interesting and relevant, and would be a great gateway for such subjects in the classroom.  Helquist, the illustrator, again provides beautiful images and a challenge for the reader.
