Jessica is back and continuing to develop as a Virago.  After her last adventure, she is ready to sit back and watch her boyfriend’s band practice and rule the stage.  But in Nightshade, danger is always lurking and a new music themed mystery is on the way.  At the Nightshade Battle of the Bands, Side Effects May Vary is set to take the top prize until another group arrives with their legion of followers.  Firmly behind her man, Jessica isn’t concerned until strange accidents begin to befall the band.  Why are the competing band members suddenly engaging in insanely risky behavior?  And what is with the strange music each of them reports hearing?

This is a fun retelling of the Pied Piper story and is full of blind turns, red herrings, and quirky characters.  Dominic, Jessica, and Flo continue to grow as characters and bring a lot of fun to the story.  Once again, the city of Nightshade provides a delightful adventure and promises more to come.  I wish I could say that this story is as strong as earlier outings, but some of the old magic seems to be slipping.  Still, this is a good read and I’ll be eager to check out the next installment.
